Energy crisis: Gas prices soar in Australia's chilly eastern state

The Federal government said it would take necessary action to help ease gas prices as supplies tighten on the east coast.


The Australian Energy Market Operator has activated the Gas Supply Guarantee mechanism, which will see the gas industry work with regulators to increase gas supply in Australia's southeastern states following soaring wholesale prices.
Energy Users Association of Australia Executive Chairman Andrew Richards said Australia was facing an unprecedented situation, which was not just a short term issue but something that needed to be addressed in the long term.
