Expert warns emergency medicine in worst state for decades

Health workers say emergency departments are routinely at capacity and paramedics are waiting hours for patients hand overs.


 

Australia’s emergency medical services are at crisis point, according to doctor and ambulance unions.

 

During the height of COVID in Australia Emergency Department ((E-D)) presentation declined, elective surgeries were cancelled, tele-medicine was widely used, and infectious diseases like influenza dropped significantly.

 

The system needs better collaboration and a more efficient model of funding, and in the short term more beds and more nurses.
