The number of people who were given Australian citizenship released exclusively to SBS showed a record number in the last financial year.

More than 204,000 new citizens have taken oaths in the last financial year, 45,000 online, reducing the completion of the backlog candidate processes in approved waiting, more than 40 percent since the start of the year.

The top three countries of origin are India more than 38,000, Britain more than 25,000 and China just under 15,000.

The 2019-2020 figure is the biggest increase of new citizens on record, 60 per cent more than the previous year and more than double the 2018 figure.

The top three countries of origin are India at more than 38,000, the UK at over 25,000 and China at just below 15,000.

But while the backlog in approved applicants is being cleared, a further 140,000 people have an application pending.
