Millions of dollars in federal funding will go towards Australia's environment and heritage sites, as part of a new government pandemic recovery package.

The federal government has unveiled $61.7 million environment and heritage package ahead of the federal budget.

Infrastructure upgrades will be made to 23 national and world heritage sites, including the Gondwana Rainforests in New South Wales,  the Tasmanian Wilderness Overland Track and the Mount Buffalo Chalet in Victoria.

One third of the total spend will go towards a new Reef Builder scheme, helping to restore oyster reefs in partnership with Nature Conservancy Australia.

The last of the funding, more than eight million dollars [[8.2]], will go towards the Great Barrier Reef.

But five million of that will be spent on upgrades to the Reef H-Q building in Townsville.

The Australian Conservation Foundation is welcoming any money aimed at preserving the environment.
