A group purportedly behind the Optus data breach has claimed to have dropped its demand for a ransom and deleted the stolen data.

The Federal Government has said the attack never should have happened and has criticised Optus for the breach but the telco says it's doing everything it can to protect consumers.

The data breach has impacted current and past customers dating back to 2017.
