RISE is piloting a new water-sensitive approach to water and sanitation management in informal settlements in Makassar, Indonesia and Suva, Fiji.
Dilail Abimanyu spoke with RISE Indonesia Country Manager, Mrs. Fitriyanty Awaluddin to find out about the research program carried out in Makassar.
This research was a collaboration between Monash University, Hasanuddin University and the Makassar City Government.
There are 12 location points and a pilot location. All of them are densely populated areas in Makassar.
Mrs. Fitri explained that the pilot location was a living laboratory as an area for trials before being carried out at 12 predetermined research points.
Some of the activities carried out by RISE include natural waste management with a wet waste system, construction of drainage to manage flood flows, and an internet-based wastewater disposal system.
Mrs. Fitri hopes that this program can continue, and that there will remain commitment from the Makassar city government.
