Indonesian language speech competition NAILA is back this year. How can this event raise interest in learning Indonesian in Australia?

The National Australia Indonesia Language Awards (NAILA) has unveiled "Sports" as the theme for its 2025 speech competition.

NAILA selected this theme for its wide relevance across age groups, its alignment with Australia's sports diplomacy agenda, and its strong social values including gender equality and cross-cultural collaboration. Through this annual event, NAILA aims to revive interest in learning Indonesian, which has been steadily declining among young Australians.

Speaking with SBS Indonesian, Partnership Coordinator Anastasia Koo dan Language Co-Coordinator Alexandra Lyons explained that judges will evaluate entries beyond traditional language metrics, focussing on creativity and effective communication. Previous competitions have featured innovative formats ranging from stop-motion animations to theatrical performances, and organisers are encouraging similar creativity this year.

Video submissions close on 27 July, with the awards ceremony set for November in Brisbane, Queensland.
