Football is more than just a sport; for many, it is a bridge connecting them to their identity and community.

Frans Simarmata, a member of the Indonesian diaspora who has lived in Australia for 25 years, said that although he was disappointed by the Garuda national team's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, it was not a difficult decision for him to subsequently throw his full support behind the Socceroos.

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do," Frans told SBS Indonesian, adding that it is only fitting for him to support a team with which he shares a connection.

I am indeed Indonesian, but I also realise that I live in Australia and that we need to support Australia.

Following the Socceroos' elimination by Egypt in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Frans admitted he was "heartbroken."

A similar sentiment was expressed by Osvaldo Giovanni from Perth, who is also active in Garuda Australia — a fan group for the Indonesian national team in Australia.

"We have a love for — well, actually — two countries: Indonesia and Australia," said Gio.

So, the love for the Indonesian national team and the love for the Socceroos are things that are perhaps sacred to many of us.

So, with the Australian national team out of the tournament, which team do they now support and why?
