Fashion lecturer and entrepreneur Janet Teowarang is working to advance Indonesia's sustainable fashion industry by introducing it to the global market.
Janet Teowarang, a lecturer at Ciputra University Jakarta specialising in fashion design, recently returned from Sydney after delivering a fashion presentation as part of the Australian Alumni Grants program she received. This activity is funded by the Australian Alumni Grants, administered by Australia Awards in Indonesia, with Universitas Ciputra Surabaya and University of Technology Sydney as the event's partners.
By showcasing peace silk (eri silk) and botanical batik from East Java, Ms Teowarang aims to highlight innovations in Indonesia's sustainable fashion sector that are not yet widely known in the Australian fashion market.
According to Janet, Australia still sources much of its silk from India, China and Thailand.
We want to introduce the fact that Indonesia is now capable of producing high-quality eri silk, and that it is more sustainable than the conventional silk that is commonly used.Janet Teowarang
