Arief Budimman was a brilliant and courageous man. He led a remarkable life, including a decade as Foundation Professor of Indonesian Studies at the University of Melbourne. Professor Budiman played a significant role in reinvigorating Indonesian studies. At a time when Indonesian Studies in Australia faces many challenges can we learn from him?


This week the Asia Institute, Faculty of Arts and the Indonesian Studies Program at the University of Melbourne will hold the Inaugural Arief Budiman lecture and a  Citizens of the World Conference  Dr Edwin Jurriens is senior lecturer in Indonesian Studies at the University of Melbourne.  He explains to Sri Dean peoples’ admiration for Arief Budiman and the significance of the conference name.
