This year Australia celebrates National Volunteer Week on 18-24 May 2026. Why do people like to volunteer? What are the benefits of being a volunteer?


Ni Made Muliari has been a volunteer for more than 20 years. He became a volunteer at the Salvation Army store in Melbourne, in the Ringwood area.

When asked what motivated him to volunteer, Made said he wanted to give something back to the community. In addition she believes that being a volunteer, also increases her sense of trust in herself. And for some, it's a way to overcome loneliness as well as provide purpose in life.

There are other benefits to volunteering, it can help you build relationships in your community. It can also have a positive impact on the wellbeing of volunteers.
