Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull's official visit to Bali has led to public tension with his successor, Scott Morrison, after another eventful week in federal politics.

Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull was in Bali this week for a conference on oceans, but that was not the only item on his agenda. It also offered a chance to discuss the controversy surrounding the Morrison Government's announcement it would consider moving its embassy in Israel to the city of Jerusalem.

The proposal had prompted a warning from the Indonesian government, a strong supporter of Palestinian statehood, that such a move would undermine the peace process in the Middle East. Mr Turnbull discussed it with the Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, a personal friend, and passed on feedback from him.
