Australians will be able to buy cheaper prescription medicines from September 1 after Parliament passed changes allowing buying prescription drugs for 60 days.

Six million Australians will soon be able to access cheaper treatment.

From September 1, people will be able to buy the drug for two months at the same price as one prescription.

The change applies to more than 300 subsidised general medicines already in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and will be rolled out in three phases.

The Pharmacy Union has voiced concern that the policy could stretch some community pharmacies, causing them to close, lose jobs, and prevent people from getting treatment.
