Why air quality should be high on our health agenda

Smoke haze drifts over the CBD in Sydney

Air quality depends on 3 factors: namely the amount of pollutants, the speed of their release into the atmosphere, and how long they are trapped in an area. Therefore smoke caused by forest fires has a huge effect on air quality.

The Bureau of Meteorology estimates that it is 70 percent likely that an El Niño weather pattern will occur again this year.

And that weather pattern will bring hotter, drier weather, and with it, could lead to devastating bushfires that blanketed parts of Australia in thick smoke for days.

Smoky conditions are dangerous and can reduce air quality.

But many people in this world have to live with poor air quality without experiencing natural disasters.
