National Volunteer Week runs from May 18 to 24 where millions of volunteers across Australia celebrate tips sharing their joy in contributing back to the community.
National Volunteer Week in Australia which takes place from 18—24 May 2026 carries the theme “Your Year to Volunteer” as an open invitation for people to volunteer flexibly according to their respective capacities and life phases.
Volunteering Australia CEO Mark Pearce explained that while communities face cost-of-living pressures and time constraints, the commitment and number of hours donated by volunteers has increased, signaling a high demand for help in the community.
This year's theme is not only a form of appreciation for millions of volunteers, but also links the local action to the global movement in the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Development 2026.
The volunteering landscape is now shifting with the rise of informal volunteering that offers greater flexibility than rigid scheduled models, thus being able to expand the volunteer ecosystem organically.

Nevertheless, there are still a variety of real barriers that discourage people from participating, ranging from financial problems due to the cost-of-living crisis, transportation constraints, language limitations, disability access, to structural barriers such as the time-consuming background check process.
Through the National Volunteer Strategy, it is hoped that these barriers can be reduced so that voluntary activities become more inclusive and accessible, where people are encouraged to start their contribution from small steps that correspond to their interests and surroundings.
