The first doses of locally produced mRNA vaccine are expected to be released in 2024 following a landmark deal with pharmaceutical company Moderna. The company has agreed terms with the Federal and Victorian governments to build a new production plant in Melbourne.

Messenger RNA, or mRNA vaccines teach cells in the body how to make proteins that trigger an immune response.

They differ from traditional immunizations, which contain attenuated or killed bacteria from the viruses they are trying to fight off.

The agreement between the Moderna company and the Victorian and federal governments was first announced in December. But with elections drawing near, the Prime Minister used this opportunity to campaign informally by standing side by side with his colleagues and company representatives.
