Rules limiting the working hours of temporary visa holders have led to the possibility of them being exploited by unscrupulous employers — as well as a lack of protection for them if trying to report problems that befall them.

The Migrant Workers Centre, Unions New South Wales, Human Rights Law Centre, Immigration Advice and Rights Centre, and Migrant Justice Institute have jointly released a report entitled Not Just Numbers: A Blueprint of Visa Protections for Temporary Migrant Workers.”

The report highlighted the systemic exploitation faced by migrant workers in Australia due to the lack of adequate complainant protection.

According to the report, current migration laws prioritize profit over the welfare of migrant workers, leading to disadvantage and exploitation in the workplace.
