Government to prevent unaffordable lending in buy now pay later schemes

Millions of Australians use the AfterPay scheme, buy now pay later which can lead to unpaid debt. The federal government announced the scheme would soon be treated as a credit product.


Over the past five years there has been an explosion of buy-now pay later schemes, which was accompanied by unpaid debt.
More than seven million Australians hold accounts.

A 2022 report from women's advocacy group Good Shepherd found the groups most at risk were young people, single parents, and women.
