Goats originated from Garut are well-known in Indonesia for their various qualities. Their stocky build and natural love of fighting make them the preferred choice for goat fighting. This event has even become a tradition for the people of Garut, West Java province. Throughout the year, various good fighting competitions are held with high prizes. Winning goats are offered at fantastic prices, exceeding IDR 100 million.
Garut goat is the result of a cross between three gotas breeds: local Javanese goat, Cape goat from South Africa, and Merino goat from Spain or Australia, which took place during the Dutch colonial era in the 19th century. This crossbreeding resulted in goat with large bodies, strong horns with a distinctive circular shape, and a tendency to be aggressive. Garut goat have now been approved as an Indonesian genetic resource.
In Garut, there is a well-known goat breeder group called Al Awwaliyah, and Aceng Cahyana is the head of this association.
Garut goat is adaptable and breed easily, said Aceng. Meanwhile, the rams are sturdy and large-bodied. This breed of goat has spread throughout Indonesia, even to Malaysia.
