Robbie Gaspar: What the Matildas have to do to be competitive against the top national teams

The Matildas have talent and tenacity but can they reach the level needed to do well in the World Cup?

After their disappointing exit from the Women’s Asian Cup tournament in India the Matildas and their coaching staff copped a lot of criticism. People who had expected the Matildas to go close to winning the championship believed the result was a ‘disaster?” So what should we expect of the Matildas when Australia and New Zealand host the Women’s World Cup in July 2023?


Robbie Gaspar was the first Australian footballer to play in Indonesia. He is currently a Player Development Manager, a football ambassador and a director of the Indonesia Institute.  He explains to Sri Dean why he is optimistic about the Matildas’ future while stressing that there are things that need to be done if the Matildas are to meet the nation’s high expectations.
