Anti-domestic violence campaigners are calling for criminalising controlling behaviours that often prove precursors to physical violence in a relationship. What are controlling behaviours? Can the proposed legislation meet the needs of women from multicultural backgrounds?

The latest report by inTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence found that 92 per cent of perpetrators of domestic violence had used controlling behaviours.  There are concerns that women of multicultural backgrounds often may not recognise the behaviour as abuse due to cultural conditioning.
