Singapore legend Fandi Ahmad talks about Indonesian football and his connection to the country

Singaporean football legend Fandi Ahmad has Indonesian blood runs through his veins. How is his connection to his heritage and how does he see Indonesian football today?


Fandi Ahmad was born in Singapore, 29 May 1962 to a working-class family. Fandi reportedly sold nasi lemak to help his family.

Despite his economic background, his talents and hard work made Fandi Ahmad a “national legend in Singapore"—Fandi became the first Singaporean footballer to play in Europe, the first Singaporean millionaire sportsperson and the first Singaporean sportsperson whose biography was published.

Fandi also has a special relationship with Indonesia. In addition to having Indonesian blood, Fandi has also played for Galatama competition club, Niac Mitra Surabaya in the early 80's. He has also coached Pelita Jaya club.
