The apology coincided with the release of a freshman safety survey, which found one in six had been sexually harassed since starting college.
More than 43,000 people at 39 Australian universities took part in the 2021 National Student Safety Survey, with nearly 2,000 revealing personal stories about sexual harassment and sexual assault.
The study found that women were more likely to be targeted than men, with Indigenous students and those from culturally diverse backgrounds at greater risk.
Violations were found to be widespread: occurring on campus, in residential colleges, student homes, pubs and clubs.
