Students flood back to uni campuses

Tens of thousands of students scoured their university campuses this week, as face-to-face learning resumes for the first time since the pandemic began. Among them are international students, who were stranded outside Australia due to border closures.

The university campus has turned back into a bustling hub for school leavers, returning locals, and international students who have all been waiting for that day.

Prior to the pandemic, international education was Australia's largest services export sector, valued at $40 billion. But when borders closed and universities went online, that figure was halved to just $22 billion. It is hoped that 2022 will be even more promising.

56,000 international students have arrived in the country since the borders opened in December. And another 50,000 have applied for new student visas.

But there have been concerns that Australia's tough border rules have discouraged some students from returning.
