Australian companies are falling short of their obligations when it comes to modern slavery, with a report showing only 27 per cent took effective action.

The joint report, led by the Human Rights Law Centre, found more than half of the companies examined failed to identify a clear risk of modern slavery in their operations.

Research from a coalition of human rights organisations, church groups and academics has revealed that Australia's largest companies fail to comply with the country's modern slavery laws.

According to the country's Modern Slavery Act, an estimated 3,000 companies are required to report annually on the risks of modern slavery in their operations and supply chains, and detail how they combat those risks.

But a new report reveals that 77 percent of companies do not meet all the criteria needed to ensure the risks of forced labor are addressed in their supply chains.

A senior lawyer at the Human Rights Law Center and co-author of the report, Freya Dinshaw, told SBS News there are currently no consequences for companies failing to comply with Australia's modern slavery laws.
