Hundreds of thousands of citizens will receive fewer of their tax refunds this year after the Australian Taxation Office quietly reactivated debts from nearly 300,000 people.

Historic debts were put on hold during the 2020 Black Summer Bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, but the ATO has now decided to recoup at least $274 million of the debt they have to pay.

But since the middle of 2022, the ATO has quietly reactivated the debt. It means 290,000 Australians could receive fewer tax refunds this year.
