Indonesia’s struggle for Independence was founded on strong nationalism in the face of colonialism. On Monday, Indonesians celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence. Nationalism is still a force but some question aspects of the current style of Indonesian nationalism.
Associate Professor Kate McGregor, who is chair of the History program in South East Asian Historical and Philosophical Studies at Melbourne University, talks about where nationalism might be useful but also disruptive in this current time of crisis.
