The legal problem is rooted in an administrative error when he filled out a 2012 immigration form, in which he did not list a previous visit to Australia because of a name discrepancy on his old and new passports.
The Interior Department considered this a violation of visa provisions, so it ordered Chou to leave his family behind.
This situation puts Chou's family in a very difficult position, given that her husband and children have language limitations and financial obstacles if they have to move to Taiwan.
In addition to facing the risk of separation for a minimum of three years without a guaranteed return visa, Chou also has to deal with the emotional distress of her children who are reluctant to lose their school environment and friends.
As a final step, the family's lawyers have filed a legal petition with Immigration Minister Tony Burke, while thousands of locals continue to sign an online petition calling for humanitarian intervention to allow Chou to remain with his family in Australia.
