What is the new Directorate of Diaspora Affairs at Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs?

The Indonesian government has formed a new unit focused on empowering its diaspora. What can be expected from this new directorate?


Diaspora is an important asset and partner for Indonesia to build the nation together.

Having been established in March 2025, the new special directorate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Directorate of Diaspora Affairs, has been actively working since September. The unit was formed under the Directorate General of Information and Public Diplomacy (IDP).

Director General of IDP Heru Hartanto Subolo said that the diaspora is an important asset and partner for Indonesia to build the nation and a Diaspora Directorate was set up to address that.

He highlighted that diaspora is a source of assets for knowledge, economics and socio-culture, as well as extensive connections and networks.

Yomi Eka Putra is the Coordinator of the Strengthening of Diaspora Organisation under the Director General of IDP. He stated that with this new directorate, the Indonesian diaspora, with its enormous potential, can be effectively managed and contribute more to national development.
