The World Health Organisation's panel is backing the AstraZeneca vaccine, suggesting it be deployed widely even in countries where coronavirus variants have emerged.

A study has shown the AstraZeneca vaccine offers less protection against the variant of novel coronavirus first identified in South Africa.

The UN health agency issued its guidance on Wednesday noting a study showing the limited effectiveness was against mild versions of COVID-19.

But there is no evidence to suggest the vaccine doesn't safeguard against severe disease.
