The ASEAN Summit was held last week (26-28 Oct.). The organisation faces a number of challenges, like strategic competition in the region between China and the USA and issues in ASEAN’s relationship with Myanmar. A Myanmar representative did not attend the Summit. What does this mean for the future direction of ASEAN?
Dr Muhammad Rum is a lecturer in International Relations from Gajah Mada University. He explains to Sri Dean the background to Myanmar’s non-attendance and assesses the importance of the decisions that came out of the ASEAN Summit.
