A string of Tourism Australia ads that aired over the last fortnight in the lead up to the Super Bowl tricked many into thinking a reboot of Crocodile Dundee was making an appearance in 2018.

Trailers featuring Australians Chris Hemsworth, Margot Robbie, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and US comedian Danny McBride aired promoting a 'Crocodile Dundee: The son of a legend returns home' movie to be released in 2018.

While the campaign is reported to be a string of Tourism Australia ads in the lead up to the Super Bowl, NT News has launched a petition to remake the 1986 classic that earned $328 million at the box office.

The potential for a reboot of the franchise had plenty of social media users excited using the hashtag #BringbackDundee, while some were still unaware the ads were a clever campaign for Tourism Australia.

However, others were less than impressed Paul Hogan would not have been starring in the fake reboot and wanted to leave the past in the past.

The majority of social media users became sceptical about the trailer when Tourism Australia ambassador Chris Hemsworth appeared.

This isn't the first time Tourism Australia has targeted the US.

It famously used Paul Hogan in its 1984 'G'day Mate' campaign that became iconic in the US.
