Cardinal George Pell has returned to Rome for the first time since being acquitted of child sex abuse charges, telling waiting media it's lovely to be back.

The 79-year-old Australian flew from Sydney on Wednesday and entered a building near the Vatican on arrival where he's believed to have an apartment.


In other news:

  • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Italy and the Vatican. He met with Italian PM Giuseppe Conte, but non the Pope who, according to Vatican sources, does not meet with foreign government representatives if they are involved in an election;
  • Prime Minister Scott Morrison is set to deliver a pre-budget address this afternoon as the government focuses heavily on jobs in the wake of the recession;
  • Sport, Seria A: Benevento 2 - Inter 5; Udinese 0 - Spezia 2; Lazio 1 - Atalanta 4.

When he departed Rome in 2017, he was the Vatican's Secretariat of the Economy and after the High Court decision, he said he planned to live in Sydney.

Cardinal Pell arrives at the Vatican days after powerful cardinal Giovanni Becciu was sacked, when Pope Francis accused him of embezzlement and nepotism.
