Referendum

On September 20 and 21, a vote will be held in Italy for a referendum asking citizens if they are in favor or against the reduction in the number of parliamentarians in the Lower House and the Senate. Italians abroad will also be able to vote, but using a different procedure.

In Australia the vote will have to be sent by post and it will be necessary to deliver the ballot a few days in advance of the Italian deadline.

Not only Italians residing in Australia will be able to vote, but also Italian voters who are temporarily abroad for work, study or medical treatment, for a period of at least three months, which includes the date of the popular referendum confirmation of the constitutional law on the reduction of the number of parliamentarians, as well as the family members living with them. To exercise their right to vote by correspondence, these voters must send a special modulo di opzione to the municipality of registration on the electoral lists by 19 August 2020.

We spoke with the Consul General of New South Wales, Mr Andrea De Felip, to find out more.
