After launching a scathing attack on the judiciary, the minister of the interior, League leader Matteo Salvini, has partially backed off.
The deputy premier, Luigi Di Maio of the Five Star Movement, assumed the paternity of Salvini's retreat, but Salvini himself later denied that there had ever been a clarifying telephone call between the two.
