Interpol has formally asked the Beijing government for news of Meng Hongwei, missing since September 29 and allegedly arrested by the authorities as soon as he landed in the Chinese capital last week. Meng, 64, is the president of the international investigative agency based in Lyon, France.

The official's wife said she had no news of her husband since he left France at the end of September. What happened after he landed in Beijing is a mystery. We asked correspondent Gabriele Battaglia to recap the story, which sounds like an international espionage novel.
