Health officials say a new COVID-19 variant has emerged in Melbourne that is highly transmissible. Melbourne recorded five new cases on Saturday with the city still under lockdown.

The Delta COVID-19 strain was first identified in a West Melbourne family who tested positive after travelling to regional New South Wales last month.
