A public hospital nurse living in a caravan

Japanese-born Akiyo Soyama works as a nurse in a public hospital in South Australia. For more than three years now, Akiyo has been living in a caravan.

When living in Tokyo, Akiyo had a completely different lifestyle.  She hardly ever did any outdoor activities.

“I have witnessed many deaths at work”, says Akiyo.  She recalls a case where a patient of hers in Japan told her to do everything she wants to do with no regrets.

“And so, this is my motto in life”, says Akiyo.
