[Exclusive] An SBS News investigation has revealed alleged crimes perpetrated by US military personnel serving in Australia, including rape, have been quietly dropped or shifted to the United States. Multiple women have told SBS News they were verbally discouraged from following through on their complaints by senior ranks within the Australian Defence Force. Those claims have been corroborated by serving A-D-F personnel, and in messages detailing the aftermath of the incidents which SBS News has seen.

A 2020 U-S Department of Defense report documents close to 900 reports of sexual assault of non-service members, and over 6,000 sexual assaults within its ranks.

A statement from Australia's Department of Defence says it is committed to supporting those affected and to holding perpetrators to account, and expects U-S military personnel to not break Australian laws while serving on Australian soil.

The US Marine Corps has told SBS News allegations of inappropriate behavior committed by U-S military forces are taken seriously and investigated by appropriate authorities.
