As fully vaccinated residents in New South Wales venture out of their homes, Victoria becomes the only state in the country counting new COVID-19 cases in the thousands. First dose vaccine administration is rising around the country, which gives health officials hopes Australia will soon bring the pandemic under control.

It was a good day for residents of western and south-western Sydney who endured some of the toughest restrictions in the state.

The once hotspot areas have become some of the most vaccinated in the country, with first dose vaccination reaching 90 per cent across all LGAs.

State-wide, 90.4 per cent of people aged 16 and over have gotten their first shot, while 74 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Victoria is still battling through its own marathon lockdown, with today's daily case numbers slightly down from previous days but not dropping below a thousand.

1,466 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases were recorded and eight deaths.

However vaccination figures are also climbing, with first doses at 85.8 per cent  - slightly ahead of the national average which sits at 82.4 per cent first dose administration.

The ACT today reported 28 new locally acquired cases and while Queensland has recorded none, they're turning their attention to vaccine rates as state lags behind the national average.
