Disgraced Catholic cardinal George Pell has been sentenced to six years in prison for sexually abusing two choirboys in Melbourne in the 1990s. The 77-year-old showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down, but there was plenty outside the court from campaigners for survivors of child sexual abuse.

Disgraced Catholic cardinal George Pell has been sentenced to six years in prison for sexually abusing two choirboys in Melbourne in the 1990s. The 77-year-old showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down, but there was plenty outside the court from campaigners for survivors of child sexual abuse.


A jury convicted George Pell in December of of sexually penetrating a child under the age of 16, and of four charges of an indecent act with a child under the age of 16.  The offences occurred at Melbourne's St Patrick's Cathedral in 1996 and 1997.

And now, County Court Chief Judge Peter Kidd has handed down his sentence in front of a packed courtroom and a global television audience streaming live around the world.
