October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month in Australia. A Sydney-based Japanese mum Kiyo Melbourne has a son with Down syndrome and thinks having him makes her family complete. However, she is a bit concerned that the topics surrounding the genetic condition are almost always gloomy and sad.
Kiyo took prenatal testing when she got pregnant with her second son, Yuki.
"I was a bit older (than other mums) when I got pregnant with my first son. So I took the test for my first son. I took the test for my second son as well. Because I wanted to be well-prepared and have the best possible care for the unborn baby, whatever happens."
"I received a phone call for the result. Having a boy with Down syndrome. Yes, it was a shock as it was something I didn't expect,
"Then I talked with my husband. We are very active family. So we thought welcoming a gentle boy is actually a perfect match for us," Kiyo said.
In the audio, on the occasion of the Awareness Month, Kiyo shares her story and experiences as a mum who has a child with Down syndrome.
