Japanese ink artist, Junko Azukawa who is living in Melbourne, produces numerous works of calligraphy (Shodo) and Japanese ink painting (Sumi-e), along with holding exhibitions, workshops, and offering live performances.

Junko’s ink painting was exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria from July 2016 to Feb 2017 and is now in the NGV’s collection.  

 

Currently, Junko has been collaborating with a Kurdish visual artist Avan Anwar, holding an exhibition called Kotodama (word spirit) together.

During the interview, Junko discusses several topics. Some of them includes: why she became ink artist in Australia, her choice to change the traditional artworks to be incorporated into Australian culture, and her current exhibition with Avan Anwar

 

Having this exhibition with Avan Anwar, Junko explains, that she hopes people who visit her exhibition realise the power words have and try to use beautiful words when we communicate with each other and help more beautiful Kotodama (word spirit) will spread, and the world will become a better place.
