Australia's hopes of automatic qualification for November's World Cup in Qatar have been dashed after a 2-0 loss to Japan in Sydney on Thursday night.

Australia's hopes of automatic qualification for November's World Cup in Qatar have been dashed after a 2-0 loss to Japan in Sydney on Thursday night.

Japan's victory came in the dying moments of the match when Kaoru Mitoma found the back of the net twice in a row. 

As the result Australia now has to go through the play-offs to progress to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
