"Offensive and truly repugnant". That was the angry reaction from Prime Minister Scott Morrison after a Chinese government official tweeted a fake image of an Australian soldier killing an Afghan child.

China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lijian Zhao tweeted a violent and doctored image of an Australian soldier holding a bloodied knife to a child's throat in Afghanistan.

In a move  likely to escalate an already tense relationship with China Mr Morrison has demanded an apology from Beijing. He said, "It is utterly outrageous and cannot be justified on any basis whatsoever. The Chinese Government should be totally ashamed of this post. It diminishes them in the world's eyes.  Australia is seeking an apology from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We are also seeking its removal immediately"
