Russia's state television airs a simulation of a nuclear attack off the coast of Britain, as more countries turn away from Russian oil and gas. This comes as evacuation efforts continue in Ukraine's besieged cities despite Russia's continued bombardment.

Russian state television has aired a simulation of a nuclear attack that they say would turn Ireland and the U-K into a "radioactive desert".

The simulation involved detonating a nuclear bomb off the coast of Donegal to trigger a 500 metre high tsunami that it is claimed would obliterate the United Kingdom.

Russian state TV's Dmitry Kiselyov suggested that his country's Poseidon nuclear underwater drone could be used.

Meanwhile, Poland has urged its European Union partners to unite and impose sweeping sanctions on Russia's oil and natural gas sectors over the war in Ukraine, and not to cave in to pressure to pay for their gas in Russian rubles.

E-U ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss their response to Russia's decision last week to cut gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland.

Energy giant Gazprom says the two countries failed to pay their bills in April.

Polish Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa says she will call for immediate sanctions on Russian oil and gas.

Germany says it would be able to cope if supplies of Russian oil were cut off due to an embargo or a decision by Moscow.

The 27 nation European Union imports around 40 per cent of the gas it consumes from Russia.

Meanwhile, people fleeing from Mariupol and its surrounding areas arrived in Zaporizhzhia while civilian evacuations from the Azovstal steel plant were still under way.
