Melinda Heal, a textile artist, has always been attracted to Japanese cultures from its language to art. She took up Japanese traditional dyeing techniques, katazome and yuzenzome, and represents her work in such a way that two completely different cultures blend beautifully.
Melinda spent 4 years living and studying in Kyoto, Japan after graduating from university in Canberra. She learned Japanese traditional dyeing techniques, particularly katazome and yuzenzome. The motif of her work is largely Australian native birds and plants.

She has presented her works to a number of exhibitions around Australia as well as Japan.

SBS asks her about the traditional dyeing techniques as well as her love of textiles.
