United States Attorney-General Jeff Sessions has resigned under pressure just a day after the rival Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives in the US mid-term elections. Mr Sessions had been under pressure from President Donald Trump for months after recusing himself from an investigation into possible collusion between the President's election campaign and Russia.

United States president Donald Trump has portrayed the country's mid-term election results as "an incredible day" for his Republican Party. He made the remarks despite a Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives which figures to lead to far greater restraints on his administration. The Republicans, indeed, slightly expanded their control of the Senate, but they lost their majority in the House of Representatives. The division of power in Congress could result in legislative gridlock, even though the two sides are talking differently.
