Kate Miller-Heidke has been crowned the winner of the first ever Eurovision – Australia Decides during the Live TV Final on SBS on Saturday 9 February. Kate took to the stage to perform her song Zero Gravity, alongside some of Australia’s biggest artists and the scores of the viewing public and jury were combined for the official results.
After winning over the Australian public with 87 points and a jury of industry experts with 48 points, an impressive 135 points overall, Kate has been selected to represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, to be held in Tel Aviv, Israel and broadcast exclusively on SBS in May.
Eurovision Song Contest started in 1956 and it has been held every year. The participants are not just European countries, but the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union. Australia has been allowed as a guest entrant since 2015.
Co-written with her husband Keir Nuttall, Kate Miller-Heidke’s song Zero Gravity explores the singer's experience with post-natal depression, which she suffered after the birth of her son, Ernie, in 2016.
The 37-year-old told SBS World News that she continues to draw strength from the emotion and power of the song.
