多文化社会が一つにまとまる日、実現に必要な「共通点」探し

海外生まれが約３割と成長を続けるオーストラリアの移民コミュニティー。先住民の歴史や彼らが直面する困難を、移民コミュニティーはより深く理解できるとの声が上がっています。

１月26日は多くの先住民にとって、暴力そして自分たちの文化が破壊された記憶を呼び戻す苦痛の日です。その一方で、１月26日はオーストラリアデーとしてお祝いの日でもあります。

１月26日には全国各地で市民権の授与式が行われます。市民権を得た多くの人にとって公式にオーストラリア人となった、特別な日となります。

しかし、オーストラリアデーを違う日に移すべきだとの声が年々強まっています。

先住民のシンガーソングライター、ギャビン・ソマーズさんは、オーストラリアの人々が先住民と手を取り合うこと、とりわけ移民コミュニティーとつながることは重要だと考えています。

先住民が経験してきた歴史や困難を、海外からオーストラリアに来た人はより深く理解できるからだと、ソマーズさんは語ります。
